What is Attuned Listening?

Attuned listening is the posture and practice of being aware and responsive to the verbal, emotional, physiological, and behavioral messages unfolding within and between people as they communicate. It requires presence, resonance, and focus.

While many of us know how to hear, few of us know how to listen in this way. Luckily, attuned listening is a skill that can be taught and learned.

THE SCIENCE OF LISTENING

Key Aspects of Attuned Listening

Presence

Offer an open and curious posture that creates room for honest and transparent conversation.

Awareness

Bring an understanding of the emotional, psychological, and interpersonal dynamics at play in a conversation.

Neutrality

Create a safe space for speakers by refraining from problem-solving, judgment, or advice.

Attention

Clear out distractions and disruptions and focus on the narrative unfolding within the conversation.

Empathy

Offer compassion, by putting yourself in the speaker’s shoes and seeking to understand their perspective.

Responsiveness

React appropriately with verbal and non-verbal cues that demonstrate engagement.
